Join us as we take a trip of a lifetime across the world to Thailand!
This adventure was a year in the making...
On New Year's Day, 2011 Kevin and I sat down to decide where our next big family vacation would be. Since we had just made the pilgrimage to Walt Disney World with the kids in December, any destination was game. We started out with discussing Hawaii, but with a little more thought we both decided we didn't want to do the resort thing and Hawaii, as beautiful as it is, is well... Americanized. We were looking for more of a cultural experience. We started thinking outside of the box. Then we visited our "bucket list" of places in the world we've been wanting to see and Thailand was our immediate answer.
A lot of people asked us, "Why Thailand?" We couldn't help but to be coy and respond, "Why not?" But seriously, this is somewhere we've been wanting to visit ever since Kevin's best buddy, Sean, sent us a postcard while he was there in 1997. Then over the years we'd watch travel t.v. shows like "The Lonely Planet", adventure reality shows "Amazing Race" and "Survivor" and would be in awe whenever Thailand was highlighted. We love the outdoors and Thailand seems to have such a variety of landscapes to enjoy: the beaches in the south, the crazy cityscape of Bangkok and the mountainous region in the north– each with it's own distinct flavour and texture. And the food! There would be so many ridiculously fresh and delightful dishes to tantalize our taste buds. But most of all, we look forward to mingling with the people. From what we've seen, read and heard, the Thai people are among the friendliest you'll find. As a practicing Buddhist, though of the Mahayana view versus the Thai Theravada view, I look forward to being immersed in a society that infuses such a world view into their everyday lives.
We thirst for adventure and Thailand will no doubt be a great place to fill our cups.
